Name of the work : Holding Smoke

The aim of the project was to combine textiles and ceramics and create an object with a unique look produced in a semi-automated system.  The project began in my basic ceramics class with Shlomit Bauman who encouraged us to investigate ceramics in any direction. Initially I copied textures of fabric in clay but decided to develop this idea further to a third dimension of the fabric so as to transform the ceramic casting. THis required adapting and inventing concepts in ceramics which led to the disceptive look of the final product.  This was further developed to allow for creating series of works while maintaining their uniqueness, one from their other as well as compared to other works in the world. The manufacture process included traditional elements such as origami as well as technological features such as 3D printing. Over and above the new process, the aim was to improve the design and look of the object and ancient sewing techniques were improved so as to create an impressive mold which maintains its ability to be a ceramic mold.  The technological and developmental process enabled control of the fabric but still left an element of lack of control and pushing the boundaries of the clay. THe outcome of all this being Holding Smoke.
