“Cutting to Recompose”

Lecturer: Ann Van Hoey, Belgium

Ann Van Hoey is a Belgian born ceramic artist, a graduate of the ceramic department of IKA – Institute for Arts and Craft in Mechelen and holds a Master degree in Economics. She began working in ceramics after many years of working in a furniture company. Ann creates geometric, minimalist sculptures from thin slabs of clay that are cut and folded and look as though they are floating. In the beginning she worked with white and brown but in the past few years she has expanded her palette to include bright colors.  In her latest series of works, Earthenware Ferrari she uses metallic colors used in the motor industry, and her works take on a new meaning raising questions about the place of craft in a world controlled by consumerism and capitalism.  In the lecture she will talk about her inspiration taken from Zen gardens, her love for mathematics and geometry and she will explain how she creates her works.
