11/2/24 Sunday 20:00 Zoom lecture with Judith Schwartz

The Ceramicist as Social Critic: An International Perspective

Lecturer: Judith Schwartz, USA

The lecture, entitled The Ceramicist as Social Critic: An International Perspective, provides an international survey of contemporary sculptors who express powerful statements about time and place.  Working in styles that are aggressive, violent, disturbing, irreverent, sometimes humorous, but always passionate, it establishes the continued use of ceramics in contemporary art and shows that the material has never been more viable as a means of conveying ideas about life and society. In addition, the lecture provides historical context for current and late twentieth-century protest as it places the artists within these thematic groupings: war and politics, the social and human condition, gender issues, the environment, and popular and material culture.
