Hilla Shapira

Before Safety, 2020

Cotton, sand

This series is concerned with the concept of relative protection and its adjustment in accordance with the environment, objects and the socioeconomic status of the users. The soft objects borrow their imagery from everyday means of protection such as sanitary pads, ammunition, bacterial protection and more, which are abstracted and divested of their original purpose. As symbolic entities, they raise questions concerning emotional power as opposed to the functional aspect of object design. As a queer creator living in a hetero-patriarchal world, Shapira seeks to undermine consensual understandings in the world of design.
