LECTURE SERIES AT THE BENYAMINI CENTER – Above and Below the Surface

Lecturer: Sanam EmamiUSA

Sanam Emami is a senior lecturer in the Ceramics Department of the University of Colorado, US, holds a BA in history from James Madison University in Virginia and an MFA in ceramics from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Emami maintains a functional ware studio practice in her studio in Colorado. Her wide range of pots and tiles are defined by historical references to Islamic vessel forms and ornaments from her country of origin. She is intrigued and fascinated by the infinite possibilities found in the tension between the boundaries of the shape and the surface decoration creating harmonious and symmetrical surfaces based on traditional shapes and ornaments, using repetitive and contrasting elements, soft colors along sharp lines.  During the presentation, the artist will share her thoughts about her practice, her sources of inspiration and her work process.
