LECTURE SERIES AT THE BENYAMINI CENTER – Above and Below the Surface
Lecturer: Ryan Labar, USA and China
Labar was born in Montana, US. He holds a B.S. in Biology, Art and Chemistry from the University of Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington and an M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After various residencies and teaching positions in the United States, he established a studio “Lab Artz” in Jingdezhen, China where he creates porcelain sculptural objects characterized by structural complexity and mechanized industrial aesthetics. The objects consist of wheel thrown and hand built elements layered, stacked and woven into the kiln in anticipation of a desired collapse. The firing is central to the process and is a significant part of the design. During the presentation he will share with us his life and work in China.
