As a potter, I am always loyal to the ceramic tradition and I will use it to create vessels and ceramic objects with a contemporary twist to them. In my pottery, there is no over-complicated showing-off, nor any desire for revolution. Instead, I work with the immediacy, naivety and energy of joie de vivre. Handwork changes the symmetry of the wheel-shaped vessel until an interesting but not unfamiliar shape is obtained. Thus, I create a vessel reminiscent of a shape from the past but with a unique personal touch.
In the past few years I have been moved by the idea of building private “altars” or temples that contains various items, some deciphered, some an enigma, which create a kind of self portrait; items that are alluring in beauty and colorfulness, which have something magical, erotic and surrealistic about them. I try to link the different sources which affected my artistic language: organic nature, the Western and pre-Colombian ceramic tradition, Mexico’s popular art and folklore, the paintings of Frida Kahlo and the ceramic decorations in the buildings of Antoni Gaudí.
