Smoke

Two exhibitions

Opening: Thursday 15/5/14 at 19:30
Closing: 5/7/15

Traditionally smoking was done to fire ceramic pots but today it is used as a finish to fired pots. Ceramic artists using this technique create surfaces that range in color from black, white, grey and brown which are reminiscent of traditional pottery but contemporary in their look. With this technique, the carbon is absorbed in the surface leaving smoke markings that are integrated in the ceramic object. Smoke firing used on the surface is a challenge to control the results; some artist let the results be dictated by the fire and others attempt to determine the results with various techniques.
