About the Project
For many local songbirds, finding a place to nest in the urban environment is a challenge. This project offers them a supportive system that includes a nesting box with an integrated planter, containers for food and water, and a vessel for dry leaves and twigs used in building the nest. The combination of nesting box and planter provides the bird with camouflage and a sense of security, while inviting us to witness a complete life cycle unfolding just outside the window.
The three ceramic elements easily attach to a balcony railing or wall, creating a supportive environment for birds. They are made using low-fire slip-casting without glaze, leaving the clay surface open and breathable, allowing natural processes to occur. The elements share a unified design language—simple, rounded lines without unnecessary ornamentation. The dimensions of the nesting box are tailored to the needs of local songbirds, and the colors are chosen to draw attention to the system’s focal point: the nesting hole.
