About the Project – The Sensory Controller

Video games are a digital medium dominated almost entirely by the visual sense. Our physical connection to games is mediated through a controller. Even when attempts are made to enrich the gaming experience with additional senses—such as vibration, sound, or motion—touch remains secondary.

This project seeks to spark a discussion about the absence of touch in video games and to redirect attention to the most tangible tool we have for play: the hand. Here, the controller becomes the primary, independent, and sensory space, while the screen takes on a secondary or supportive role.

The Sensory Controller offers a new kind of interaction based on materiality and unusual tactile experiences within the world of gaming—contact with cold metal, rough ceramics, a rotating wooden wheel, and activating gestures such as squeezing or folding. These invite moments of material sensitivity, genuine physical presence, and heightened awareness of touch.

The project was developed with the support of the Kaydar Design and Technology Center at Shenkar.
