Name of the work: (Off) Centered

Centering. That is a central issue when working with clay: centering clay on the wheel, the work itself, the artist when working.  The works are created with coils slowly rotated on the wheel. Each row is connected to the previous one and the row above.  Together they balance the movement of each other, the movement that has halted and frozen a moment before losing balance and collapsing.  The abstraction and deviation of the works create two centers:  one stable and defined in the lower part of the work, the other abstract and flexible in the upper part of the work. Equilibrium is established between the two centers, a balance of opposing powers emphasized with the red thread bound around the top coil symbolizing a “red line” being off center and maintaining the balance.
