Porcelain is a beautiful material but at the same time challenging and sensitive.  Adding paper makes it possible to stretch its limits of size and form and yet maintains its unique character: translucent, delicate, strong and white. In the

workshop we will prepare the clay and then make sculptural and functional objects using various techniques but mostly slabs.

We will finish the work learning about drying, coloring, glazing and firing.

Avi Amesbury an Australian artist will do a residency at the Benyamini center in October and will be giving a hands on workshop. The workshop will focus on the use of porcelain and a combination of ceramic techniques to explore story-telling through connection to place. We will explore form by combining slab, stamping, hand-building and slip-casting techniques and investigate the use of found-materials from the natural environment as an expressive language. Participants will make plaster stamps, create slabs by hand using a full bag of clay, learn processes for test-firing found materials, and create finished works from these various processes and techniques. An arts diary will be created to develop ideas and concepts, document inspiration and research, and to record the work-in-progress.
